New Animal Exhibits & A Cell Phone Tour Ready For VisitorsPOSTED: 7:20 pm EDT April 14, 2010 GRAY, Maine --The Maine Wildlife Park opens Thursday with new additions and changes. The park has six new small mammal exhibits for porcupines, fishers, woodchucks, raccoons, skunks and opossum. The new areas, which are funded by the Friends of the Maine Wildlife Park, are set in the open air next to the deer trail, the park Web site said. The exhibits replace the older habitats in which the animals were held. The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife runs the park."What we do is try to represent a lot of the projects of the department so that people can learn more about what we do to manage wildlife, their habitats and making sure there's enough wildlife for everyone to enjoy," said Lisa J. Kane, the park's natural science educator. People with cell phones have a chance to listen to free audio tours starting Thursday. Visitors may dial an access number listed, dial the number of the exhibit they would like to learn about and then they will hear a recording about the wildlife, the Web site said. The only charge for the service will be for minutes used with a cell phone service provider. The park had a 10 percent increase in attendance in 2009, with more than 102,200 visitors, the park Web site said. It is open seven days a week, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. To read full article, click here. |
