NARRATIVE ANIMAL IMAGERY
At the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art
The Animals Speak

(San Luis Obispo, CA) Narrative Animal Imagery opens at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art, October 8 – November 12, 2010. The juried exhibit is of works inspired by fables, mythological tales and contemporary interpretations of such stories. Encompassing work in a variety of media, the exhibit will be accompanied by narrative panels referencing the literary work. In addition, there will be a chance to hear excepts from the stories in a cell-phone audio tour. The tour, by OnCell is the first audio tour that the Museum has hosted, and will certainly be a dynamic addition to the show.

The nationwide call for entries brought in a surprising variety of works, including political satire and children’s story illustrations. The audio tour, by OnCell is the first to be a part of an exhibition at the Museum of Art. Juror Greg Kucera of Seattle found choosing the works challenging. Exhibition coordinator, Patrick Terjak states, “Allowing the animals to speak to us and for us, raises a number of questions. Some of the works are allegorical, but others are simple and direct. This range of voices is truly unique.”

There will be a reception for the artists on November 5, from 6–9 pm in conjunction with Art After Dark gallery walk.  Related events inspired by the exhibit include: A lecture with two of the artists, EJ Stapleton and Loyal de Neuville discussing The Children’s Book Creative Process on Sunday, October 17, 3 pm.  The documentary “The Cats of Mirikitani” will screen Monday, October 18, 7 pm.  A two-day workshop “Paint Your Pet” with Palm Springs artist Jean Bradley will be held on October 9 & 10.
