In February, AHCMC was named one of ten cultural institutions from across the United States to win the OnCell iPhone App Contest. The App Channel affords visitors a multimedia experience complete with audio tour content, logos, images, a tour map, text captioning and GPS-navigational features. AHCMC will be using this platform for a cell phone audio tour.
“The OnCell mobile phone tour offers AHCMC a unique opportunity to promote the County’s outstanding collection of public art to a very broad audience,” says Suzan Jenkins, AHCMC CEO. “It’s like a museum without walls,” adds Megan Pagado, AHCMC’s digital guru who is handling the technical side of the project.
The phone tour is in development now and will be launching later in the year. How will it work?
Imagine you’re cruising along on your skateboard – or whatever mode of transportation you most favor. The wind’s ruffling your hair. You spot an enormous steel magnolia pushing up through the brick sidewalk at the corner of Wayne and Georgia Avenues in Silver Spring. You stop. What the heck is that thing? On closer inspection you see a sign for Art on the Go! You are directed to call a phone number and when you do—Voilá! You have reached a gold mine of information about the art work and artists.
Most phone tours will last about minute. The phone tour will be linked to a web-based virtual public art tour AHCMC is creating as well. So saddle up your ride, grab your phone and experience Art on the Go! About OnCell
